Photography and writing.

Rob Severein (b. 1964) grew up in Amsterdam and studied design and typography at the Academy of Arts in Utrecht (HKU) after graduating from grammar school. After obtaining his bachelor’s degree (BA) in 1988, he started a career as a junior art director at a renowned advertising agency in Amsterdam.

In the following years he quickly climbed up to the position of creative director and is responsible for numerous award-winning campaigns in the Netherlands and abroad at various advertising and marketing agencies. Entrepreneurship is beckoning and on 1 January 2004 he starts his own advertising agency.

The nature of his work changes. From being sales driven it steadily develops into brand storytelling, a name that would only later become a household name. Although creatively very successful, he left the agency in 2011 to further develop himself as a visual storyteller and photographer.

He enrols in a 3-year master’s program at the Amsterdam Photo Academy and from that moment on he focuses on documentary photography in which stories and backgrounds about people and their connection to a certain place play an important role.

His series about the Exclusion Zone around Chernobyl and the right wing AZOV battalion in Ukraine were published in NRC Handelsblad and VICE Magazine. He was also nominated for the SO Dutch Photography Awards 2015.

In 2017 he participated in the Northern Lights Photography Masterclass (Noorderlicht Photography Masterclass) with a project called HE SECRETLY CARRIED HER PICTURE. A family story about his grandfather who escaped from a German forced labour camp in WW2 and returned home. On foot.

At the moment Rob is working, besides commercial assignments, on a photography project about the great void in FOARBY NIJ ALTOENAE (The elsewhere world) and on a series about China in MIDST THE MYRIAD PEAKS.
